Maryland Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month!

May is National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Hispanic and Latinx community. According to the census, 62.6 million Americans identify as Hispanic or Latinx, making them the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority. In Maryland, Hispanic/Latinx are 12% of the Maryland population and number around 744,000. 

The Heritage Month observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period in September-October. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. 

During this Hispanic Heritage Month, the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights (MCCR) encourages Marylanders to learn more about the culture and contributions the Hispanic/Latinx community have made in society.

Every May we take extra time to celebrate Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian (AAPINH) Heritage Month by shining a light on AAPI experiences and filmmakers. Enjoy this collection of films, some premiering in May as well as some gems to revisit.

 Maryland Hate Bias Reporting Forum on May 11th

The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, Maryland Office of the Attorney General & Maryland Commission on Civil Rights' Western Maryland Advisory Council will host a Hate Bias Reporting Forum. The Hate Bias Reporting Forum will provide community leaders and members of law enforcement with important information in response to the 2021 Hate Bias Report for the State of Maryland. The forum will engage local law enforcement, elected officials, and community leaders in discussions and information sharing on methods to facilitate more effective reporting as well as responding to bias incidents and hate crimes. During Fair Housing Month, HUD is commemorating the 55th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act with events highlighting the impact and significance of this landmark civil rights law. Please join the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) on Wednesday, April 26 at 2:00 P.M. (EDT) via webcast for the Fair Housing Month 2023 National Activity, Building an Equitable Future: A Housing Policy Conversation with Gen Z College Students.

In recognition of this year’s Fair Housing Month theme, Choices for All Voices: Building an Equitable Future, FHEO will host a virtual conversation with Gen Z college students. Their conversation will explore housing policy and the importance of securing fair housing protections for the new generation of housing consumers.

The event will feature the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for FHEO, Demetria L. McCain, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Policy, Legislative Initiatives and Outreach, DeAndra J. Cullen, and a panel of Gen Z college students.
